June 6, 2009 -Best Friends Boxer Rescue picked up Owen on Friday.
Owen was turned into one of our favorite pounds with his brother Danny
and his angel Nancy got them both out and onto a better life. According
to the woman that brought them in, mom was a purebred boxer and dad was a lab.
We've had Owen for 3 days now and wow is he a mover. He's about 90% housebroken
with only 2 accidents in the house. He gets along great with my resident boxers
(a female that's 3 years old and a 7 month old male). He has more energy than both
of mine combined. Owen needs to be supervised constantly until he calms down a bit
as he will find and chew anything he's not supposed to have. He is a mix, but his
attitude and playfulness is all boxer. He loves my 3 children (ages 12, 10 and 6)
and cries for them when they go to bed. He will entertain himself with toys for short
periods of time. He currently chooses to play with water bottles, balls and wubbas he
finds in the toy box. We're working on crating which he seems to like better if his crate
is covered. He whines for a few minutes, but then hushes and stays fairly quiet.
To show him the crate isn't a bad thing I've been giving him Kongs stuffed with peanut
butter when he goes in. With the door open, he now goes in on his own to nap. He's doing
great with his recall and sit and responds quickly to no. I think the perfect home for
him would be one that has a lot of time to spend helping him use his energy wisely, either
opposite shifts or a family with a stay-at-home parent. This boy will be destructive if
he gets bored. Kids or another young dog would be really good for him, but not a necessity
if you have the time to walk/run or play with him daily.
June 12 2009What a difference a week makes! It seems that Owen's energy
was mostly about not knowing what is and isn't appropriate. He's now wonderful
in the house and outside. Owen comes to his name and sits on command. He does
still jump the gates we have up to keep him out of a room. The only "accidents"
in the house are when he's marking a favorite toy. He'll be neutered soon,
so hopefully that will help. Owen responds quickly to "NO" and will go to the
toy box to grab a toy instead of whatever the "NO" is. The only lab behavior
I've really noticed is he always has something in his mouth. Now that he knows
shoes, socks and such are "NO"'s this is 99% of the time a toy. He was trying
to get to the table while the kids were eating and a simple teathered time-out
was all it took to correct it. He's so smart! Crating during the day is going
really well (I'm never really gone more than an hour or 2), but we're still
working on night. After a potty break around 5 am he's not quite ready to be
put back in. I've been taking him to my room then and he lays quietly on the
dog bed until we're ready to get up.
June 19 2009 Owen is doing wonderful. He sure is a great, though
energetic little guy. He had a playdate and did wonderful with the other big dogs.
He continues to love playing with his 7 month old foster brother(boxer). We've
taken him for a couple of walks and he's okay at it, but if the leash is long
enough he'll zig-zag in front of you. It looks like walking nicely on a leash
will be our next task to work on. He is doing much better in the crate, but still
needs let out to potty during the night (normally after 6 hours).
