March 20 2010 - Best Friends would like to welcome Corto. Here in Buffalo Bill country, we have a home grown player we like so we named this guy after him. Corto came from a favorite shelter in Ohio that we work with. He was an owner surrender. He's very submissive, eager and a bit skittish at times. I think the skittishness is from not being indoors. It's jumping from things he's not familiar with. He falls to the floor when you go to pet him. It's not in a skittish way, more like a submissive way.He has almost like a nervous tic. At first Kelly and I thought it was a sign of aggression, but it's not. He curls his lips, but at the same time his tail is going, he's beaning and hackles are completely down. He can easily adjust to a cat. He shares the dining room with Opie's crate (the cat). Of course Opie was in it when we brought this guy in. At first he curiously, but not at all aggressively tried getting to Opie. Since Kelly was here to help me, I put Opie on his harness and leash while she held Corto on his leash. we started by sitting in chairs at opposite ends of the room. When Corto would relax we'd inch closer. Within 20-25 minutes they were buddies. we didn't push it and the close contact was only about 5 minutes. Just enough for them to meet and sniff. Opie is back in his crate and Corto hasn't bothered it even once since. He was wonderful for a nail clipping, allowing me to pick up each paw and also not fussing when his jowls are touched. He allowed petting of the back and head while drinking. He needs to gain 8-10 lbs. He has scars on the outside of each leg. There's no marks what-so-ever on the inside leading me to believe they aren't bite wounds, but maybe from what he was tied out on. He has a scar on the right side of his face just above his nose. It's odd looking to me. I'm thinking maybe he had a scratch and flies picked at it?

UPdate March 29,2010 - I picked up Corto last Saturday and he is now adjusting to a new life indoors. He has lived outside the past three years and has a little wear showing it. We are doing introductions with my pack very slow so Corto doesn't get over-simulated and anxious. So far he's met the kitten and our 1 year old male boxer. He did extremely well with the kitten and with a little work should be able to roam freely with him. He is also doing well with our young male boxer and our 3 children (ages 13, 11 and 6). He seems to be fairly submissive so far, but not well socialized. That will surely change here! He is housebroken and a dream in the crate. You don't hear a peep from him except the wonderful boxer sigh here and there.Corto was taken to the vet for a couple of lumps and bumps around his neck (where his collar is). They aren't anything serious and the vet feels they are due to being left outside and his collar rubbing or pinching him. We were told that being inside and getting good food and care could very well be all he needs for them to go away. He is on antibiotics just in case they're infected. Corto was wonderful during his bath and nail clipping. I picked up each paw with no problems at all and I even looked at his teeth without him getting upset. Watch Corto's page for more info as he meets the rest of us and starts living and learning the life of a wonderful indoor dog.

Update April 19 2010 - Wow, what a crazy week at our house! The kids being on Easter break has added a lot of chaos with friends coming and going constantly, unusual noises the lovely boy children make and all kinds of excitement. Corto has taken it all in stride and just loves all of the extra attention. He's never shown any signs of being overwhelmed and welcomes everyone's attention. Corto isn't a very jumpy boxer, but he does have a a very wiggly butt and kidney beans a lot. I think he'd be happy in almost any household as long as he's an inside dog as all boxers should be.

Update May 14 2010 -Corto is doing excellent! He could be the perfect first dog for a family. He's consistent with sit, stay and coming when called as well as not jumping up on people and is housebroken. Down is something we're working on becoming consistent with. Corto has met a few other dogs and doesn't seem to care much for the rougher, energetic types. This could be because he is learning how to play and wasn't well socialized. This week he has discovered squeaky toys and it has been fun to watch him play. He loves soaking up all the attention he can get from whomever he meets. Corto has been loving this beautiful, warmer weather. He plays in the yard with the kids and loves to run free (in the fenced yard). He loves his crate and will even go in the open crate to lay down if someone is in that room.

Update June 15 2010 - Corto has some really great pictures and a short video on facebook, I just can't for the life of me get the video link onto the website! If you would like to see them, please email me at Linda@bestfriendsboxerrescue.com and I will send you the link!
