October 27, 2008 Best Friends Boxer Rescue would like to welcome Bella. She came into
a pound we work with in Ohio as a stray. It was evident that she was in a medical emergency state. She
had a very large abcess in her neck. A very kind volunteer immediately took her to the vet. She was
sedated and the mass was removed. It ended up being a very long and involved surgery as the mass was
very close to her jugular vein. We are awaiting biopsy results to determine if it was an infection or
possibly cancer. Since she is so young, we got our fingers crossed that it was a massive infection. She
will be transported to WNY as soon as she's stronger and we know what we're dealing with. In the meantime,
she could use positive healing thoughts sent her way.
October 31, 2008 We got a whole lot of good news regarding Bella! By the way, she is on
a transport heading towards WNY as I type. The mass removed from her neck region was sent to IDEXX
Laboratories and this is the report that came back: "This is a deep inflammatory lesion which is most
likely due to penetrating trauma that may have introduced foreign material or bacteria. If the lesion
persists or fails to respond to therapy, microbiological culture or probing for foreign material is
advised." The angel doctor that did her surgery in Ohio assures me that she got all of the mass out of
her neck and had also Xrayed to make sure she hadn't swallowed a stick or a sharp object that had maybe
penetrated her esophagus or trachea. We are expecting this good natured girl to be in her foster home
this evening. She will have her stitches removed next week and she will be spayed after a few weeks of
rest and recovery. We couldn't have asked for a better outcome! Don't wait on this girl, she won't be
around long! Everyone who has come in contact with her said she has been nothing but sweet during the
whole ordeal. The woman that held her in Ohio after surgery said that she is eating like a champ and
is feeling better as each day passes. She is anxious to get out and play. More to come soon!
November 7, 2008 Bella has been staying at her foster home for a week now.
She is doing wonderfully, you would never know that she has been through such an ordeal. She had
her sutures removed today and it appears that she is a very good healer. Naturally, due to the Boxer's
short fur, a visible scar will be present. What a sweet and playful dog Bella is! She is so full of joy
and energy. She gets along with both my male and female equally well. She likes to run in the yard with
them and take rests in the leaves. She is housetrained and cratetrained. She walks well on a leash with
virtually no pulling. When I stop to clean up a BM, she patiently sits down and waits for me! Too cute!!
She is one happy dog - she wags her tail while I fix her dinner and continues wagging throughout her meal!
She is so grateful for the HUGE second chance that Best Friends Boxer has given her. She truly beat the odds.
Bella will be spay in roughly three weeks and then will be ready to go home with her family. Bella would fit
into any family well. Although she is very petite, she is active. So I would advise caution around very young children.
